The south of Mahé is the wild side of the island. Steep. Green. Quiet. Fewer hotels, fewer people, more forest. The full day tour goes from Victoria south through the mountains to the coast at Baie Lazare, then west to the small bays that the big buses do not reach.
The stops are the kind that locals go to on a Sunday. Anse Intendance, where the swell rolls in from the open ocean and the beach is a long curve of pale sand. The Takamaka rum distillery in La Plaine St Andre, an old plantation house where the rum is still made the way it was made a hundred years ago. Most visitors to Mahé never see the south. The buses do not go. The taxis are reluctant to take the mountain roads.
