The south of Mahé is the wild side of the island. Steep. Green. Quiet. Fewer hotels, fewer people, more forest. The full day tour goes from Victoria south through the mountains to the coast at Baie Lazare, then west to the small bays that the big buses do not reach.
The stops are the kind that locals go to on a Sunday. Anse Intendance, where the swell rolls in from the open ocean and the beach is a long curve of pale sand. The Takamaka rum distillery in La Plaine St Andre, an old plantation house where the rum is still made the way it was made a hundred years ago. The viewpoint at Mission Lodge, where the eyes of the British missionaries once looked out over the same sea the sea-slave traders had crossed. The tea factory at Morne Blanc, where the only tea grown in the Seychelles is still grown on a slope so steep the pickers carry the leaves up on their backs.
You eat lunch somewhere local. The guide knows the small hotels that serve good creole food to people who are not staying there.
Most visitors to Mahé never see the south. The buses do not go. The taxis are reluctant to take the mountain roads. The tour companies that run the standard half-day loop cut it off at the bottom of the hill. This tour does not cut anything off. You come back having seen the half of Mahé the brochures do not show.
| Best for | Visitors who have already done the north coast. People who like scenery, history, food. Anyone who wants to understand what the Seychelles actually is, beyond the beach photographs. |
|---|---|
| What to bring | Pick-up and drop-off at your hotel. Bring water, sunscreen, a light layer for the mountains. Lunch is not included. Allow the full day. The roads are winding and the stops are unhurried. |
