Sainte Anne was the first marine national park in the Indian Ocean, established in 1973, and it shows in the best way. The reefs here have been protected for over fifty years. The fish behave like fish, not like they have been fed. The corals are not pristine, no reefs in the world are pristine anymore, but they are healthy and full.
The boat leaves Victoria in the morning and reaches the park in about twenty minutes. The first stop is usually the reef off Sainte Anne Island itself. Snorkel, swim, watch the parrotfish work the coral. The water is calm because the islands break the swell. Then on to Moyenne Island, where the lunch is served under a tree and the giant Aldabra tortoises wander the grounds the way goats wander a field at home. They are not in enclosures. They are in charge. After lunch there is time to walk the island, see the old cemetery, look at the view back towards Mahé.
This is the easiest marine park day out of Victoria. No long boat ride. No rough sea. Almost guaranteed good visibility. The Moyenne Island stop is something children remember for years. The lunch is honest Seychellois food, not buffet, not catered, just cooked on the island by people who cook this kind of food every day.
