Patatran Village is a small hillside hotel above Anse Patate, on the quiet north coast of La Digue, the island of bicycles and ox-carts. It is an intimate place of around twenty-five rooms in charming little houses built into the slope, and it holds 4.2 stars from more than seven hundred reviews. Tropical greenery, mango and coconut trees and the sound of the ocean give it a character all its own.

The rooms are set in cottages climbing the hillside, and guests single out the superior rooms for their balconies and views over the water. There is a pool, a bar and a restaurant, and being on La Digue the pace is slow and everything is close. It suits couples and travellers who want somewhere small and characterful rather than a big resort, with the sea and the rocks right below.

The food and the service are what guests write about most. The kitchen gets real praise, more than one visitor calling it some of the best food they had in Seychelles, and the team is described as attentive, warm and genuinely welcoming. Anse Patate is on the north-east coast of La Digue, an easy bicycle ride from the ferry jetty at La Passe, close to the granite-and-sand coves that this end of the island is known for. Anse Source d'Argent, among the most photographed beaches in the world, is a little further south. La Digue is crossed by bicycle rather than car, and the ferry reaches Praslin in about fifteen minutes. For a characterful little hillside hotel with a fine kitchen on La Digue, it is one we are glad to recommend.
