It is an intimate place of around six cottages, and it holds an excellent 4.8 stars from more than one hundred and forty reviews. A private beach with its own house reef, generous owners and clean, spacious cottages a short way from Beau Vallon are what fill the reviews with warmth.
The cottages are clean and roomy with everything you need to cook and settle in, set in a garden with resident giant tortoises and only steps from the water. Guests snorkel straight off the property, where the house reef has turned up turtles right in front, watch the sunset from the garden and use the snorkelling gear and life jackets the owners lend out. Many describe returning again and again, which tells its own story.
The hosting is what guests write home about. The owners, Katrina and her husband Cyril, and the team, Jane, Pence and Jena named warmly among them, are described as going well beyond what is expected, once even putting up delayed travellers for a night for free when the airport had nowhere to send them. A barrel of drinking water kept topped up in each cottage is the kind of small, thoughtful touch that recurs in the reviews. It is that genuine, family care that lifts the stay.
Bel Ombre sits on the north-west coast of Mahé, just around the headland from Beau Vallon, the island's most popular swimming beach with its calm bay, water sports, diving and line of restaurants. Bel Ombre itself is a quieter residential village with its own beaches and a few local shops and eateries, famous in island lore as the spot linked to the pirate Levasseur's treasure. Victoria, the capital, is a short drive, and the whole north of the island is easy to reach. Beautiful stay with amazing hospitality from the owners. Katrina and her husband made our stay very memorable. They even give life jackets and snorkeling gear with refundable deposit, the property has direct access to the ocean. Sunsets are so beautiful. Highly recommended.

Bel Ombre sits on the north-west coast of Mahé, just around the headland from Beau Vallon, the island's busiest and best-loved swimming beach. It is a residential village rather than a resort strip, with its own quieter stretches of sand, a handful of shops and small restaurants, and an easy coast road to Beau Vallon's calm bay, water sports, diving and evening dining. Bel Ombre is also known in island lore as the place tied to the pirate Levasseur's buried treasure, still hunted along this shore. Victoria, the small capital, is about fifteen minutes away, and the airport and the beaches of the south lie across the island. Mahé is the main island, home to the airport and most of the country's people.
