About Beach Cottages
- A family-run self-catering retreat in a beachfront cove at Bel Ombre, minutes from Beau Vallon, in a tropical garden of endemic, culinary and medicinal plants.
- Two young Aldabra giant tortoises, Master Yoda and Queen Latifah, live in the garden.
- The Anse Major nature trail starts a few minutes away. The Dan Bernard and Mare aux Cochons trails are close for harder hikes.

More About the Stay
The cottages are clean and roomy with everything you need to cook and settle in, set in a garden with resident giant tortoises and only steps from the water. Guests snorkel straight off the property, where the house reef has turned up turtles right in front, watch the sunset from the garden and use the snorkelling gear and life jackets the owners lend out. Many describe returning again and again, which tells its own story.
The hosting is what guests write home about. The owners, Katrina and her husband Cyril, and the team, Jane, Pence and Jena named warmly among them, are described as going well beyond what is expected, once even putting up delayed travellers for a night for free when the airport had nowhere to send them. A barrel of drinking water kept topped up in each cottage is the kind of small, thoughtful touch that recurs in the reviews. It is that genuine, family care that lifts the stay.
Bel Ombre sits on the north-west coast of Mahé, just around the headland from Beau Vallon, the island's most popular swimming beach with its calm bay, water sports, diving and line of restaurants. Bel Ombre itself is a quieter residential village with its own beaches and a few local shops and eateries, famous in island lore as the spot linked to the pirate Levasseur's treasure. Victoria, the capital, is a short drive, and the whole north of the island is easy to reach.
