Lazare Picault Hotel is a small hotel perched on a hillside above Anse Gaulette, at Baie Lazare on the scenic south-west coast of Mahé. It is an intimate place of around fourteen rooms, and it holds an excellent 4.6 stars from more than one hundred reviews. Absolutely breathtaking views over the bay, spotless, spacious rooms and exceptional, friendly staff are what fill the reviews, along with a breakfast guests genuinely look forward to.

The rooms are clean, bright and comfortable, many with a balcony framing a wide view over the bay that guests happily linger over each morning, and breakfast is a real highlight, a good spread of fresh fruit, cake, eggs, samosas and pancakes. To be straight, the hotel is a little dated in places, which guests take in their stride given the setting, and its hillside position means a few stairs to climb, so it suits those happy with a short walk up for the view.

The staff are what lift the reviews most. They are described again and again as exceptional, friendly and attentive, quick to help arrange cars, taxis and tips on where to go, and the host is singled out for genuinely good local advice. It is that warm, capable service, matched to one of the finest views on the coast, that guests remember. One honest note on the beach below, Anse Gaulette can gather some seaweed, so the swimming is better up towards the rocks, where the snorkelling is good.

Baie Lazare is a village on the south-west coast of Mahé, one of the loveliest and most scenic parts of the island, named after the explorer Lazare Picault and set among green hills above a string of beautiful beaches. Nearby are Anse Soleil and Petite Anse, small, postcard-perfect coves reached down winding lanes, along with the long beach of Baie Lazare and the cove of Anse Gaulette below the hotel. This is a laid-back, green corner away from the crowds, with the beaches and viewpoints of the south close by, the airport around half an hour and Victoria a little beyond. For a hillside hotel with a breathtaking bay view and warm service at Baie Lazare, Lazare Picault is one we are glad to recommend.

Great little hotel and lovely staff. The hotel is a little dated, but that is to be expected. The beach just outside is great (I suggest walking up to where the large rocks are). The breakfast is basic but very lovely. The staff are all very friendly and accommodating.

The staff was very friendly and attentive. We had a super view of the bay from our room. The room was very spacious, bright and clean. The hotel offers very good breakfast with fresh fruit, cake, eggs, samosas, pancakes, etc.. The beach in front of the hotel, called Anse Gaulette, was a bit disappointing, there were st

Unfortunately roadworks were going on at the time of our visit. Bad for us, but will be very good for everyone as it brings sidewalks and maybe work continues for two-three weeks more. Then it will be perfect. It's somewhat remote, but amazing location and stunning view. From the balcony we spent time every morning, wa

The hotel is on a hill, so be ready to climb stairs. Rooms are nice and new and comfortable. The host is very friendly and gives great views on places to visit. The long beach is good for swimming, there are some points with weed, but others points near the rocks are great for snorkeling.

Getting there and the area

Baie Lazare is a village on the south-west coast of Mahé, one of the loveliest and most scenic parts of the island, named after the French explorer Lazare Picault who landed here. It sits among steep green hills above a coast of small, beautiful beaches, with Anse Soleil and Petite Anse, two postcard-perfect coves, reached down narrow winding lanes nearby, and the long beach of Baie Lazare and the cove of Anse Gaulette below. This is a laid-back, green and scenic stretch well away from the busier north, with a few restaurants including the Mango House Hilton, the beaches and viewpoints of the south close by, the airport around half an hour by car and Victoria a little beyond. Mahé is the main island, home to the airport and most of the country's people.
