On the wild south coast of Mahé, tucked behind Grand Police beach, lies one of the island’s last great wetlands — a maze of still, glassy water and ancient mangroves that most visitors never see. This guided kayak tour takes you into it: ninety unhurried minutes of flat-water paddling with a local guide, through a high-biodiversity reserve so quiet and green it has been called Jurassic. No experience needed, small groups only, and the only sound is your paddle.
It is the calm opposite of the open sea. The water barely moves, so beginners are comfortable within minutes, and there is time to drift, watch for birdlife in the mangrove roots, and take in a landscape that feels a world away from the beaches. Your guide knows the wetland’s flora, fauna and history, and the tour finishes with a break at Grand Police beach — rock pools, wide-open sand, and, in season, turtle tracks in the dunes.
You meet your guide at the wetland, get fitted for your kayak and a short safety briefing, then push off into the channels. The route winds through the mangroves and across open, mirror-still water toward the sandbar at Police Bay, with the guide pointing out the plants and creatures that make this reserve so rich. There is time to pause, float and take photographs before you paddle back and stretch out on Grand Police beach.

Grand Police sits on the remote south-east tip of Mahé, well beyond the busy beaches of the north. Behind its long, wild beach lies one of the largest coastal wetlands left on the island — a protected reserve of mangrove and fresh, still water that shelters rare birds and plants. It is a thirty-to-forty-minute drive from Victoria and the airport along the scenic south coast. A hire car or a hotel transfer is the way in, and a pick-up can be arranged.
