Set high on Sailfish Estate above Anse à la Mouche, Sunset View Self Catering looks straight down the bay to the west, where the Indian Ocean takes the last of the light every evening. This is a family guesthouse rather than a resort, run by Christine, Danny and their family, and that is the whole point of it. Four bright self-catering apartments on the quiet south-west coast of Mahé, a ten-minute walk from one of the calmest, shallowest swimming beaches on the island, well away from the crowds of the north.
The apartments are built to be lived in, not just slept in. Each is around 100 square metres with its own private entrance, a full kitchen, a comfortable sea-view terrace and room for a family of four. You can cook the day’s catch, dry your washing in the sun and watch the sunset from your own balcony. Christine and her team service the apartments daily, arrange airport pick-ups, help with car hire and point you toward the beaches and coves most visitors never find.
Each apartment sleeps up to four in one large bedroom with an extra-long double bed, plus a sofa in the living area. The kitchen is a proper one, with a stovetop, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and all the kitchenware a self-catering stay needs, a dining table inside and another out on the terrace. Bathrooms have both a walk-in shower and a separate bath, with a hairdryer and fresh towels. Every apartment is air-conditioned and comes with a flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, a washing machine, and a private terrace or patio looking out over the bay, the garden and the hills behind. Linen and towels are provided, the apartment is serviced daily, and the family speak English, French and Italian.

Anse à la Mouche is a wide, shallow bay on the south-west coast of Mahé and one of the safest, calmest places to swim on the island, which is why families settle in here. The water is warm and flat, good for children and for snorkelling along the edges. In the village, Fisher Fish & Chips is about 550 metres away and Oscars Beach Grill & Bar a little beyond it. Michael Adams’ art studio, one of the best-known galleries in Seychelles, is a short drive up the road, and the craft studios and beaches around Baie Lazare, Anse Soleil and Petite Anse are all close by. Victoria, the capital, and the airport sit on the other side of the island, roughly half an hour away.
The estate is reached by a short, steep access road, which is exactly what keeps it quiet and gives every apartment its view. A hire car is the practical way to explore this coast, and the family can arrange one for you. Buses do run along the road below, but only occasionally, so most guests drive. There is free parking on site.
