Alibel Beach Villa sits on the calm south-west coast of Mahé, at Anse à la Mouche, with the bay barely fifty metres from the door and the beach just across the road. It is a newly built, family-run place rather than a resort, run by Salifa and the Bell family, and it pairs a bright, modern feel with hand-crafted Creole touches, some made from recycled wood. Around it grows a garden the family tends themselves, with fruit trees, vegetables and labelled medicinal plants, and a resident giant tortoise said to be over two hundred years old that children love to feed.
The welcome is a real one. Guests arrive to a kit of water, a few things to eat and a bottle of Takamaka rum, receive a WhatsApp with the family’s own tips on beaches and restaurants before they even land, and are often let in early after a long flight. There is an outdoor pool set in the garden, a beachfront to sit out on, and the whole place is set up for families, couples and travellers who want the quiet side of the island.
Alibel is looked after in person by Salifa and her husband, the Bell family. Guests single her out again and again — for the warm welcome, the island tips sent ahead by WhatsApp, early check-ins after long flights, and even free lifts down to Petite Anse, one of the prettiest turquoise coves on this coast. It is the kind of hosting that turns a booking into a return visit.
Six self-catering villas, sleeping two in a 60 m² one-bedroom, or up to four in a 102 m² two-bedroom, two-bathroom villa. Each has air-conditioning, a seating area, a flat-screen TV with streaming, a fully-equipped kitchen and a dining area, and a private bathroom with a walk-in shower, hairdryer and toiletries. Every villa opens onto a private balcony or terrace with outdoor dining and views over the garden, the mountains and the sea. Linen and towels are provided, and a safety deposit box is standard.

The beach is quite literally across the road — Anse à la Mouche, a wide, shallow, calm bay that is one of the safest swims on Mahé, with clean azure water and few crowds. Anse Boileau and Anse Louis beaches are a short drive on, and the family will often run guests down to Petite Anse, a turquoise cove nearby. For food there are small supermarkets and local spots within walking distance, including the Lunch Box and a pizza outlet across from it. Up the coast are the Kot Man-Ya exotic flower garden, the Jardin du Roi spice garden, the craft village at Domaine de Val des Prés and Michael Adams’ art studio. Victoria and the airport sit on the far side of the island, roughly fifteen minutes away by car.
Car hire can be arranged at the villa, and there is free private parking on site. A paid airport shuttle is available, and buses run along the coast road. Payment at the property is by cash.
