The trail starts at the end of the road in Bel Ombre, on the north-west coast of Mahé, and the first part is the steepest. The path climbs through the forest, then crosses a saddle, then drops down towards the coast. The whole walk is on a proper footpath, not a scramble, but the uphills are real and the surface is uneven.
Anse Major is the reward. A beach at the bottom of a forested valley, with granite boulders and a view across to Silhouette Island. There is no road, no shop, no buildings. The only way in is the trail. Most days, the only other people on the beach are the ones who walked in with you.
The swim is good when the sea is calm. The picnic is up to you. The walk back takes about two hours at a steady pace.
Mahé is full of beaches you can drive to. Anse Major is not one of them. The walk filters out the people who would not enjoy the walk, which is what keeps the beach quiet. Half a day, a reasonable level of fitness, and you have seen the north coast the way it was meant to be seen.
